Screenprinting, being a form of printing that often produces imperfections and other minor differences from print to print, gave me a diverse collection of final prints.
My posters and t-shirts have a lot of variety in colour combination, texture, alignment and ink coverage. The GIF shows my ‘This Machine Kills Fascism’ posters, and it is clear from looking at it how much each poster differs from the last. Screenprinting removed the clinical perfection that can be achieved through more digital printing methods. I think that this has resulted in a series of posters that all have their own personality and quirks. Smudges, misalignment and instances of both patchy and blotchy ink placement show the very natural and human processes that were used in order to create the final product.
For me, this process felt like a breath of fresh air. I find myself often falling into the trap of sticking to purely digital methods when designing, as it is often more convenient, less messy and less expensive. But getting my hands dirty and taking a more physically active role in creating something felt very rewarding and exciting.
With 50+ unique posters, and 10 unique t-shirts, I was ready to move on to the next step and think about how I might make my protest graphics publically viewable and impactful.
